Zinfandel is a traditional Italian varietal (known as Primitivo there) that was brought to California by immigrants in the 19^th century.  These grapes do well in warm, sunny climates where they can fully ripen.  Zinfandel grapes produce a high level of sugar when ripened, which translates into a dry, full-bodied, high alcohol wine.  These bombastic, fruit-forward wines can be simple and fun or rich and complex.
